Heavy Equipment Mechanic:
Drill Rig and Truck Fleet Maintenance
Position Summary:
CATLIN is seeking an experienced Heavy Equipment Mechanic with extensive knowledge in diesel engines and hydraulic systems to support our in-house drill rigs and truck fleet from our Wilmington, NC shop.

This position is responsible for the inspection, preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and repair of CATLIN’s geotechnical/environmental drill rigs, support trucks, and ancillary fleet equipment. The ideal candidate will be a self-motivated problem-solver comfortable working in both a shop environment and in the field at active project sites, with a strong background in diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and heavy equipment. The position may require travel on an as-needed basis in response to field service calls for equipment breakdowns/emergency repairs.
Responsibilities Include:

Inspect, diagnose, and repair geotechnical drilling rigs, support vehicles, and related heavy equipment.

Perform and document scheduled preventive maintenance and service intervals to maximize equipment uptime and safety.

Troubleshoot and repair diesel engines, hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, and electrical components.

Rebuild and replace components including pumps, valves, hydraulic cylinders, hoses, and fittings.

Perform welding, fabrication, and structural repairs on drill rig frames and support equipment as needed.

Calibrate, test, and adjust equipment to manufacturer specifications.
-
Potential to respond to field service calls for equipment breakdowns and emergency repairs at project sites on an as-needed basis.

Maintain accurate maintenance records, repair logs, work orders, and parts usage documentation.

Coordinate with drill crews, field supervisors, and project managers to prioritize and resolve equipment issues.

Manage and maintain an organized shop environment, including tool inventory and parts stock.

Adhere to all CATLIN safety policies, OSHA requirements, and equipment manufacturer guidelines at all times.
Qualifications:

Required

High school diploma or GED; technical or vocational training in diesel mechanics, heavy equipment, or a related field strongly preferred.

Minimum 3–5 years of hands-on experience as a heavy equipment mechanic with experience working on drilling machinery, or similar industrial equipment (see experience breakdown below).

Demonstrated proficiency with diesel engine diagnostics and repair.
Strong working knowledge of hydraulic systems, including troubleshooting schematics, rebuilding components, and repairing hoses and fittings. -
Experience with pneumatic and electrical systems found on heavy equipment.

Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and engineering drawings.

Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
Preferred

Prior experience with geotechnical, environmental, or water well drilling equipment.

Direct familiarity with CATLIN's fleet equipment is a significant plus, including: Central Mine Equipment (CME 45B, 45C, 55, 550), Mobile Drill B-57, Morooka MST800 track carriers, Diedrich D-50, and/or Geoprobe/PowerProbe DPT rigs.

Experience maintaining or repairing track-mounted carrier systems (e.g., Morooka MST800 or similar rubber-track platforms).

Welding experience — MIG, TIG, and/or Stick — with ability to perform structural fabrication repairs.

CDL Class A or B license, or willingness to obtain.

Experience with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) or fleet management software.

Additional compensation may include overtime pay for field service calls and project-based travel per diem.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
This position involves work in both a shop environment and active field sites in varying weather conditions. Candidates must be able to lift 50+ lbs, work at heights, operate in confined spaces, and stand or kneel for extended periods. Use of appropriate PPE — including safety glasses, gloves, steel-toed boots, and hearing protection — is required at all times.

CATLIN is seeking an experienced driller to add to our drilling operations in North Carolina and South Carolina. This position involves physical labor working directly with a Wilmington, NC based drill crew performing environmental and geotechnical exploratory drilling.
Work will include borehole drilling and/or monitoring well installation and collecting soil and groundwater samples for laboratory analysis.
