CIVIL ENGINEER

CATLIN is seeking a Civil Engineer in our Charleston, SC office to perform various types of general civil engineering. 

 

This position may involve site layout and surveying, paving and grading design, water distribution and wastewater collection systems, stormwater management, erosion and sedimentation control for a wide range of private and public clients. Experience in all phases of construction projects including design development, permitting, preparation of plans, specifications, construction cost estimates, bidding process, construction administration, negotiating change orders and approval of contractor pay requests is desired. Any experience working with the Department of Defense is a plus.  

 

Position requires excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to make informed, independent, and professional decisions. Applicants must have a 4 year degree or higher in civil engineering from an accredited university and have at least 10 years of progressive experience. Candidate must have PE license in SC. Candidate must be able to obtain DOD security clearance which includes thorough background checks.

CATLIN is an established Engineering & Geology firm seeking entry level trainees in Wilmington, NC
 

Responsibilities include:

  • Willingness to learn

  • Help driller with boring and monitoring well installation

  • Collecting soil and groundwater samples for laboratory analysis

  • Physical labor working directly with a drill crew performing environmental and geotechnical exploratory drilling mainly in the coastal plain of NC and SC

Requirements:

DRILLER

CATLIN Engineers & Scientists (headquartered in Wilmington, NC) is a leading Environmental, Civil, and Geotechnical Engineering firm specializing in providing high-quality services to our clients in the Southeast since 1985. We are looking for an experienced Driller to join our team.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Operate and maintain drilling equipment in accordance with safety protocols

  • Conduct drilling activities on various job sites 

  • Collect soil and rock samples

  • Record and report daily drilling data

  • Collaborate with other team members to ensure project completion within deadlines

  • Maintain drilling equipment and ensure it is in good working condition

  • Always adhere to safety protocols

Qualifications:

  • At least 2 years of experience in geotechnical drilling

  • Experience with ATV, trailer, and track-mounted drill rigs

  • Ability to operate drilling equipment and conduct drilling activities with minimal supervision

  • NC Level A Drilling License preferred

  • Experience with SPT drilling by hollow stem and mud rotary drilling techniques

  • Experience with rock coring techniques and core sample collection

  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment

  • Ability to work in various weather conditions and terrain

  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record

  • Class A CDL required (air brake endorsement a plus)

  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test and subsequent random tests along with a background check

  • OSHA 40hr HAZWOPER training desired but not necessary

  • Ability to obtain Military Base Access 

Home based mobilization is an option for the right candidate in addition to locations in Wilmington, Raleigh or Charlotte, NC or Columbia, SC. Ability to travel approximately 90% of the time out of town. Overnight travel is routinely required.

FIELD SERVICES & LAB COORDINATOR

The Field Services & Lab Coordinator will oversee day-to-day tasks associated with coordinating field/drilling and soil laboratory activities to include preparation of project field books, briefing field crews on specific job requirements, coordinate utility locates, maintain inventory of well materials, etc. to ensure work is completed on time and in accordance with project requirements/ specifications and safety standards. 

Coordinator will be responsible for tracking, inventory, tests performed, distribution of soil samples to the laboratory and maintaining/calibrating testing equipment. This responsibility is vital to performing the necessary maintenance and testing required to maintain laboratory accreditations. The coordinator will be responsible for keeping the Project Manager up to date on the status of each ongoing drilling project in the field. 

This role offers the opportunity to gain experience and engage in challenging work with a locally owned small business in search of design excellence. The role is based in the firm’s Wilmington, NC office (overnight travel may be required). The ideal candidate will have applicable experience in an environmental, civil, or geotechnical firm or related industry; a positive, can-do attitude; time management skills; and the ability to pivot from one project to the next and back again.

The Field Services & Lab Coordinator will coordinate the firm’s field services and soil laboratory tasks as noted below:

GEOTECHNICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL FIELD/DRILLING SERVICES TYPICAL DUTIES:

  • Read, understand, and be familiar with Request for Proposal (RFP), Scope of Work (SOW), and Cost Estimate.

  • Coordinate, schedule, and implement preliminary activities.

  • Organizes, plans, tracks, and prioritizes work to ensure completion by a given deadline or other time constraint. Reviews and distributes test results.

  • Function as liaison between Project Managers and field crews to ensure ALL tasks are completed.

  • Collect, compile, distribute, and file all field data.

  • Know NCDOT and general Geotech investigation and reporting criteria and requirements.

  • Field Logs - Preliminary review and redline of logs.  

  • Coordinate Geotechnical samples for laboratory submittal.

  • Communicate with management and field staff regarding analytical and/or geotechnical laboratory testing services.

 

SOIL LAB TYPICAL DUTIES:

  • Supervise, mentor, train and monitor Soil Testing Technicians and laboratory staff.

  • Perform various soil laboratory tests (grain size, hydrometer analysis, liquid and plastic limit tests, compaction and CBRs) or field tests based on specific sample requirements.

  • Interpret analytical results to determine data quality and usability.

  • Communicate with management and field staff regarding laboratory testing services.

  • Prepare laboratory testing reports and report test results to Project Managers via appropriate test reports including maintaining test result charts and tabulations.

  • Comply with safe handling, storage, and disposal procedures for samples.

  • Obtain soil laboratory testing certificate(s) to aid in current and future laboratory accreditations.

  • Maintain laboratory in organized manner.

  • Maintain a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a professional manner with customers, co-workers, and supervisors.

  • Other duties as assigned by Soil Lab Manager or Chief Operating Officer (COO) or as required by project.

 

Communicating with Supervisors, Peers, or Subordinates:

  • Provide relevant, effective, and routine written or verbal communication to supervisors or peers.

  • Advise management about work issues of concern as they occur.

  • Disseminate information as appropriate within the agency.

  • Recognizes, provides, and communicates potential areas of improvement.

 

Documenting/Recording Information:

  • Prepares and maintains complete and accurate records, reports, logs, databases, chain-of-custody, and correspondence based on established guidelines and procedures.

  • Reviews Quality Assurance/Quality Control parameters, specific to and required by acceptable methodologies, to ensure they are performed with each data set.

  • Documents all relevant work activities including observations made during soil testing, contacts, and meetings.

 

Updating and Using Relevant Knowledge:

  • Fulfill established educational, training, and safety requirements.

  • Keeps up to date with technical developments, standard operating procedures and regulations and applies new knowledge to the job.

  • Seek opportunities for professional development within and outside of the company.

 

Educational and Experience Preferences: Equivalent combinations of technical training and/or related experience. Preferred candidates will have a degree in Geology. Extensive experience will be considered in lieu of degree. 

Minimum Five years' experience in duties described above and/or equivalent combination of experience and technical training or apprenticeship program. Must understand ASTM standards, AASHTO and USACE documentation.
